What True Friendship Means to Me

If I had to choose one quality I value most in a friend, it would be loyalty, but not just loyalty in the traditional sense of standing by you. I mean the loyalty that shows up in quiet moments, in presence, and in staying in touch even when life is tough or complicated. To me, a real friend is one you can share your worst nightmares, your most fantastical dreams, your 2 a.m. tears, and your 7 p.m. random overthinking episodes, and they still won’t bat an eye or leave.

I deeply value the trustworthiness of one who keeps my weaknesses tenderly and never uses them as gossip. One who understands things about me that I never shared with the world and protects them like secrets stored in a closed box. Honesty is important, too, not the sugar-coated kind, but the kind that comes from love. The friend who will speak the truth to you even when it hurts a little, because they want you to grow, not shrink in your comfort zone.

Support is a big one too. I think friendship is having a place to come home to when everything else is uncertain. It’s that person who cheers the loudest when you win, not because they have to, but because your joy literally lights them up too. It’s somebody who doesn’t compete, doesn’t get jealous, and doesn’t attempt to dull your shine; rather, they adjust your crown and say, “Go ahead, I got you.”

I believe the best types of friends are the ones who sit with you in silence when words become too difficult to speak. Who makes the ordinary feel magical through their presence. Who appear not only when you’re at your best, shining and rising, but also when you’re falling apart and need someone to remind you that you’ll rise again.

Friendship, to me, is a gentle kind of home. One in which there is no judgment, only understanding. No pretenses, but only presence. No conditions, but only connection. I don’t ask for perfection, I just hope for realness, warmth, and someone who’ll walk with me, no matter what season I’m in.

Because in the end, I believe we all just want someone to know our soul and say, “I’m not going anywhere.” That’s the kind of friend I try to be, and the kind I feel grateful to have in return.

  1. True friends are not found in today’s world. Today everyone only cares about their own interests. No one even speaks without any selfish motive.

    1. I totally understand that feeling, it’s tough out there. But I still believe true friends do exist. They’re not always easy to find, but when you do, they’re the ones who stay without a reason, love without conditions, and support without any hidden agenda. Rare, yes, but not impossible. 🌿

      1. Yes, I agree it is very difficult but nothing is impossible. But once you find your true friend, you will see that the whole world will start to envy you. Because a true friend will never let you be sad nor will he let you get ruined. That friend will not care whether you are rich or poor. He will be with you at such a time when everyone would have forgotten you.

      2. Exactly, people will always find a reason to be jealous. These days, very few genuinely appreciate deep, real friendships.

      3. Whatever happens, we have to live in this world. There will be good people and bad people too. But we have to enjoy our life at our own level.

      4. Yes! Can’t control the world, but we can choose to live with joy in our own way.

      5. Don’t forget to smile in your sorrow and don’t forget to hurt others in your happiness, this is the philosophy of life.

      6. Hey! I think there might be a little typo in your comment, “don’t forget to hurt others in your happiness”, I’m guessing you meant “don’t forget to not hurt others” 😊 But I totally get the message you were trying to share. Life really is about staying kind, whether we’re in joy or pain.

      7. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for correcting my mistake. What I meant was that no matter what the situation is, never hurt anyone. If you cannot make someone happy, then do not hurt him.

      8. Of course! I totally got the message you were trying to share in your earlier comment itself, just wanted to gently point out the wording. Your intention was clear and truly meaningful. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful perspective! 🌸

      9. Life is about living every moment. It is very good if there is someone to share our sorrows. Otherwise, life is life and we have to live it smiling.

  2. Hi Neha!
This post on friendship is one of my favourites on your blog. This can be the best also.
Mostly you tell and talk about your thoughts. Here one more person is involved other than you.

The way you explained friendship, its one of the closed and most accurate explanations.
At the end you concluded with we want someone with whom we can share our soul. That person say “I’m not going anywhere”— these are the best words I’ve heard/read recently.

One who shows their presence, by sitting together, silently, when you face a major loss, is a true friend. Without speaking a single word they make you realise that they are available to you.

You talked about loyalty. How can I forget that… loyalty, trust, and openness are the building blocks of a friendship.
It’s too hard accept someone as a friend who isn’t loyal.

Truthfulness and honesty designs the character of a person. A person is formed based on honesty. Accountability is linked with honestly. That means you are backed up by reasons and facts.

Support cannot be ignored. People do not support in difficult times. And when they are able to stabilize themselves it’s their responsibility to give back the support to the needy friend.
Support can be emotional, financial, and motivational.

Friendships are the purest relations of the world. They are about more and more growth.
In the present times, traditional society is failing to play its role effectively. Friendships, the true ones, are equals to God’s blessing.

    1. This honestly made me so happy to read 😊
You understood everything I wanted to say, and the way you added your thoughts made it even more beautiful.
You’re so right, real friendship is rare and truly a blessing.
      Thank you for writing this

  3. I thought I had a True friend… until the day she abandoned me when my father passed away…We have known each other since Kindergarten and she knew my parents and that my father had health issues. When she started preparing me for my father’s death while he was still in the hospital, I was upset and asked her not to say negative things like that. After that she hasn’t called me… and when I informed her that my father passed away…she msgd “Condolences”…
So much for a friendship of 20+ years…and for being with her during the loss of her father and in-laws even during COVID…
    Do true friends actually exist???
I thought it did…but life has taught me otherwise

    1. Hey, thank you for opening up and sharing something so personal. I can feel the pain behind your words, and honestly, you didn’t deserve that. Losing a parent is already unimaginably hard, and to be left by someone you trusted deeply makes it even heavier.

Sometimes, life teaches us that not everyone has the emotional maturity or capacity to handle our pain, even if they’ve been around for years. And it hurts because we expected better from them. But please don’t let one broken bond make you doubt the existence of true friendship. The real ones do exist, they may be rare, but they’re out there, and sometimes they show up when we least expect it.

You still deserve the kind of friend who stays, listens, and shows up. Sending love and strength your way 🫶🌷
